Caracol

Been there recently?

Historically the most important site, Caracol (‘the snail’ in Spanish), is located in western Belize, near the border with Guatemala and within the Chiquibul Forest Reserve. Caracol was the center of one of the largest Maya kingdoms and today contains the extant remains of thousands of structures. The city was an important player in the Classic period political struggles of the southern Maya lowlands, and is known for defeating and subjugating Tikal (while allied with Calakmul, located in Campeche, Mexico).

Caracol is a magnificent Maya Ruins that underwent a big excavation project in 2001 and ended up uncovering Caana temple, the A complex, as well as South Acropolis. The site has to offer a large amount of monuments that was discovered which are still in the Archeological site where we will be able to view them. It is fully surrounded by the Chiquibul Forest Reserve being one of the largest protected areas in Cayo district. While hiking, wild life site seeing is all part of the experience.
