Rainforest

Belize and the Peten region of Guatemala are home to a very exciting rainforest that includes more species of trees than all of the lower 48 states in the United States! The rainforest is home to thousands of species of blooming plants, great epiphytes (bromiliads and orchids), exciting lianas (vines), parasitic plants, exotic butterflies, and the famous leaf cutter ants. There is even a beetle with a head the shape of a peanut! And Belize's national flower is the black orchid, found deep in the forest.

Luis's father spent his life in the rainforest seeking sapodilla trees and collecting their sap to boil down into chicle - the basis for our chewing gum. His life in the forest translated into great personal knowledge, which was passed on to Luis. Luis and his guides want to share that knowledge with visitors to Belize.

Work with Belize Nature Travel to set up your opportunity to explore the exciting rainforest environment in Belize. Learn how the Maya used the plants found in the forest. Learn how the forest was shaped by the Mayan presence. Learn how this forest influences modern medicine.

Don't forget to have Belize Nature Travel take you to a butterfly center for one of your outings - there you can witness in a more controlled environment many of Belize's famous butterflies and all the stages of their development.
